Re: Listen to one track, while recording a second just by itself?

one ear on and the other off so I could still hear my voice. That's one way to do it. The other way is use a microphone or microphone system which will theatrically mix your live voice in real time with the backing track. Note you can't (usually ) use the computer for this. The computer will always...

Re: Listen to one track, while recording a second just by itself?

That is I do not want OVERDUBBING What you have isn't overdubbing. Overdubbing plays a clean backing track (typically drums or rhythm) into your headphones and records your voice clean, by itself on its own track. What you have is a routing error, and it's pretty common for people who like recordin...

Re: on Launch: "Audacity is already running"

Does your machine connect to "network services?" Read that in the widest possible sense. Network Connected Drives? iCloud? Neighbor's 3TB drive on Ethernet across the yard and over the fence? Makers love to let you think that Cloud Stuff is just the same as locally connected drives, but Au...

Re: Audacity Music Project Disappeared! (No waveforms)

1300 orphan files (which I have no idea what that means) Audacity shows are held in little 6-second snippets. If you are missing 1300 of them, that means 130 minutes of show is missing. If this happens a lot, you should probably find if you're running out of room on your machine. Desktop > Go > Com...

Re: Listen to one track, while recording a second just by itself?

You can announce live with wild track in your headphones. It takes practice. Your live mouth is two or three words late compared to the headphone voice. The resulting new track is almost perfectly matched to overall time and only wanders in word matching by a bit. Shift offset in post production. Th...

Re: on Launch: "Audacity is already running"

There's probably a "lock file" left over from a previous session. And that can happen if you had Audacity or the computer "exit in an uncontrolled manner" (crash). Did you? Does this happen often? If you have frequent crashes, then it's a terrific idea to solve that before you k...

Re: Measuring RMS: Problem with Noise Gate on 16-bit track

My ultimate goal is to measure RMS of selected track Probably not. The ultimate goal is a product or service. Before we get too deep into the weeds dissecting each dB, it would be good to know what that product or service is. Language Learning? Ride or Gaming production? AI Environment development?...

Re: Measuring RMS: Problem with Noise Gate on 16-bit track

Audacity adds a dither signal to WAV output so the conversion from 32-floating to 16-bit fixed errors don't cause problems. That conversion is never going to hit the theoretical -96dB noise floor ("zero" noise) no matter what tools you use. You can turn dither off in Preferences > Quality....

What he said. Mastering is designed to be used as a suite, a harmonious grouping of tools, and not in pieces. Mastering.png When you finish Audiobook Mastering, the performance is ready for conversion to MP3 and submission. Audiobook Mastering guarantees Peak and RMS. If you recorded in a nice, quie...

What level are you normalizing to?
That's two votes for RMS Normalize being set wrong.
