Re: Determining Record Levels

Step one would have been to post in the forum appropriate to your computer and version of Audacity. I'm just going to start asking you those questions anyway and wasting time. I assume a PC because you said so. Running Windows and not Linux? And Which Audacity? Referencing this picture: http://kozco...

Re: How to install Audacity on a Mac - Perfectly?

Oh, no. Not thread wander! MPEG 1, Audio Layer III only became an ISO standard in 1990, but I think the design goes back to 1988. Yes, because of the way lossy compressors work, you can get better and better at it by throwing (newer) technology and being careful how you work. It's an effort and time...

Re: How to install Audacity on a Mac - Perfectly?

We'll see if I get any arguments over my numbers. I regularly get into it with other engineers about actual implementation of some of that technology. I picked AAC because that compression is generally regarded as twice as good as MP3, another million year old technology. So again, depending on how ...

No, that was The Flying Nun in her Oscar acceptance speech.

<<<Global Moderator>>>

That means he can't go to sleep any more, right?

Re: very low input level

<<<tape 1 out output on the amp>>> Bingo. You're not using a phono preamp. You're using the phono section of a much larger entertainment amplifier. I tried to do that with my sister and it just didn't work. The computer worked just fine, but the Line-Out level of the amplifier just wasn't up to the ...

Re: How to install Audacity on a Mac - Perfectly?

<<<So you are saying it won't be fixed for 1.2, or at all?>>> Not in 1.2.x. Not unless you personally want to fix it. The code is available. The Audacity developers are hell-bent on getting the documentation and program version 1.4.x out the door as the stable version of the 1.3.x beta software. We'...

Re: How to install Audacity on a Mac - Perfectly?

I can't do it, either. [Record] Blammo! Crash City. It doesn't give you additional headroom. It gives you better footroom and you can move your show further down without hitting the mud. Keeping in mind that broadcast uses 48000/16 and their "natural" sound level is -20, not -12 like DV or...

Re: Playback audio swaps left and right after recording in s

Forgive me. It's Windows Sound Recorder that's built into Windows. Windows Audio Recorder is a separate commercial product.

Good thing it's Friday.

Re: Playback audio swaps left and right after recording in s

The ThinkPad instruction book I downloaded does indeed insist that the machine has a Line-In with no switching or other shenanigans. Let's assume they were consistent across the product line. Do you know where Windows Audio Recorder is? Can you run that and get the problem? I think the software is c...

Re: Playback audio swaps left and right after recording in s

<<<Hope this may be a common problem.>>> Nope. First time for me. You can get what seems like channel confusion if your audio connector isn't plugged all the way in. The wrong gold contacts inside the computer will touch the plug, and it might change when the cat walks across the rug or the humidity...
