Re: Why does Audacity clip waveforms when they are exported?
<<<I don't see why these numbers should be more accurate than those on a linear scale. >>> Just very different. The bouncing lights audio meters and the tools all work in dB. Having the timeline waveform be in percentages leads to no end of confusion. There doesn't seem to be any correlation--even t...

Re: Lame not working with Audacity on MAC
<<<When I take it to the proper file in my lame folder, I get the message: could not open encoding library....>>> I had that problem on an early install. That's the download zip file, right? The early Stuffit Expander would produce the lame library file, but it was damaged and Audacity wouldn't open...

Re: Looking to record 4 channels for scientific research
I got little pieces of this. Audacity right out of the box (if it had a box) will cheerfully manage 16 tracks of audio. Audacity Preferences > Audio I/O > Recording Channels. What kills you is Devices. Audacity will handle 16 tracks of audio from any one device. So your audio interface device (sound...

Re: Question about adjusting amplitude
All that isn't to say that there are no tools that change volume interactively. There are. However, they're not set and forget types of tools. Load a simple tune. Select All. Effect > Compressor... That's the Dynamic Range Compressor. Books have been written about how to adjust those for pleasant re...

Re: Question about adjusting amplitude
<<<At the risk of exposing my newbieness, what is a celebrity song?>>> I make up terms as I go to keep everybody on their toes. "Celebrity Song" is not necessarily somebody singing. It's more like "of particular note" (no pun intended). The Surprise Symphony is a Celebrity Song. ...

Re: Musing on how Audacity handles multiple gain adjustments
Apply a gain reduction of 85dB and then a gain boost of 85dB. If you get garbage instead of the original wave, you have your answer. Or go the other way--go up first. Both directions, if applied only once, will render the show as trash. I don't think it's a problem of being smart enough. Yes, it see...

Re: "Error Opening File"
If you scan the opening page of this forum, you will find segments for both versions of Audacity on all three platforms. http://audacityteam.org/forum/index.php I believe 1.4.x will be released for all three computers. Actually, it's finished now. They're looking for somebody who likes to write inst...

Re: "Error Opening File"
Putting stuff under /Applications may have been a dodgy idea since you could run into permissions issues. The operating system looks very sternly at any changes made to that folder/directory. Stick operating files in your Documents folder. You may not get any actual folder there until you try to mak...

Re: Question about adjusting amplitude
<<<Another way you can do it is via cut&paste of the tracks.>>> Actually, I think cut and paste may be the only way you can stick two songs on the timeline one after the other. But do you want that? The task is to adjust the relative volumes between songs so they all come out right on a music CD...
