Re: imperfect copy of tape
Can you listen on headphones? Is the capture in mono instead of stereo? Listen to the original tape and see that it's in stereo, that there are instruments on the left and right. Now listen to the digital copy. Still in stereo, or does it sound flat? If the performer with the megaphone is in the dea...

Re: How to install SilenceMarker plug-in
When I install Audacity, I don't follow the party line. I make an Audacity folder on my desktop and drag it into /Applications. Then I explode the Audacity program image on the desktop and copy everything, all the folders, programs, everything to /Applications/Audacity. All the extensions and plugin...

Re: Automatic record stop?
None that I know of. Further, 1.2 has no timers, either, so you can't set it for one hour and go fishing. 1.3 may have timers, you might want to investigate that. I'm not at all hands-on with 1.3. Silent Sense isn't the cool tool you think it is because the ends of records are rarely completely sile...

Re: Sounds On Different Computers
So the real question you didn't ask is, "Why doesn't my computer sound as bad as everybody else's?" It's a common problem with producing a show. You don't want to be on a computer that's going to hide all the errors during production. You want the errors all clear and obvious so you can co...

Re: need help quickly
There is no good way to reconstruct a show from interrupted capture clips.
<<<without pastein them one at a time?>>>
You may not be able to do that, either. Audacity doesn't always save the capture clips or number them in order.
Once you kill a live recording, it's dead.

Re: dB level meaning and reference
One more piece. It's embarrassing how many people use the Radio Shack sound meters. http://www.radioshack.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=audio%20meter&origkw=audio%20meter&sr=1 Everybody goes for the hi techie digital one, but remember that one won't show you moving values like the ana...

Re: dB level meaning and reference
I suppose we should start with the differences between real world and digital recording. The real world is measured in dBSPL or Sound Pressure Level. This is a measurement of the actual movement of air. There are two variations A and C. "C" is flat. If the air moves with sound, the air mov...

Re: Video equivalent of Audacity
OK, so you don't have to worry about the Macrovision step, but where the sound on a music CD is a really close cousin to WAV file format and it's really easy to get back and forth, video on a DVD isn't anything like editable video and it has the sound multiplexed into the picture. MPEG2 (DVD, Broadc...

Re: Video equivalent of Audacity
Oh, and then there's the software to get around DVD Copy Protection and then the software to turn the embedded MPEG2 transport stream into actual video and audio.
But aside form that...

Re: Video equivalent of Audacity
A Ulead Video Studio program is packaged with everything you buy. If you buy a $3 video cable, there will be a copy of Video Studio at the bottom of the box. I bought a $19 PCI FireWire card for my PC this weekend and there was a Ulead CD in the bottom of the box. However, that's not going to be you...
