Re: Amplify in relation to gain?

You didn't say where in the process you were changing the gain ( recording? pre, post, effects??) but I can give you a couple of fuzzy rules. If you're talking about the bouncing lights sound meters (red or green), then you can barely hear a 3 dB change, 6 dB is getting more noticeable and by the ti...

Re: loud distortion

<<<Condenser microphones are typically used when low level sounds, or sound that have a lot of high frequency components are being recorded.>>> Ummmmmm. Yes, but it doesn't have to be. They're just more accurate. They use an impossibly light and delicate sound membrane inside the capsule that respon...

Re: Sound plays intermittently when editing track

One more note. Audacity defaults to WAV files. Almost all Apple programs accept them just fine, including QuickTime, iTunes, and GarageBand.

Re: Sound plays intermittently when editing track

Let me go through a capture and edit session. During a live voice capture, I use the production breaks to export WAV files of the previous session. Almost nobody can perform at top form for hours (with the possible exception of Robin Williams), so sessions usually go no longer than ten minutes. At t...

Re: Sound plays intermittently when editing track

<<<Why should audio be dropping out of the middle of my file.>>> We do need to be very careful about our words here because Audacity doesn't do things like everybody else does. If you opened up a sound file in Garage Band (or QuickTime) and there were holes in the performance, then that sound was ne...

<<<followed the last set of instructions>>>

Yes, but did you follow the first set of instructions? Which Audacity do you have?

Re: loud distortion

I would not be using condenser microphones. They are totally the wrong mic for a high sound environment. Dynamic microphones are very difficult to overload and perfect for this. Shure SM-58, etc. Dynamic mics will get loud enough with no distortion that they will overload the microphone pre-amplifie...

Re: Recommendations: $100 usb stereo ADC for studio mic

If you just want something to mess with, we were surprised how well this thing works. http://www.startech.com/item/ICUSBAUDIO-USB-20-to-Audio-Adapter.aspx It was designed for comunications work with an analog microphone one direction and a headphone the other. The Mic-In is "wet" and will ...

Re: ANY SUGGESTIONS on HOW TO RECORD CLEARLY!

One more little push. Which computer do you have (of the three major groups) and do you have a reasonable soundproofed room? Have you ever tried to record voices before? Most people have no idea how noisy their life is until the first time they really listen and try to find a quiet room. I recorded ...

Re: Cannot save files

And at the risk of being too close to the problem, Audacity doesn't save files. Audacity Exports Files and Saves Projects. So you're having trouble saving your project. Audacity > Preferences > Directories and see if the location listed there is real, or even if there is a location listed there. Cli...
