Lock files get left behind when the program crashes. Many programs do this. It's pretty common.

Audacity always wants to treat everything as a project. That's why you have to go through the extra step of exporting. There's an interesting philosophical juggling act here. Hard drive filling up? What does it say in Audacity > Preferences > Directories? Does that directory or path actually exist? Is there room on the drive where you're saving the project? INFO all the drives. If, no matter what you do, you still don't get the record button back, you can trash the Audac...
