I can't tell from the post what you're trying to do. Are you on a laptop with a built-in microphone? Are you performing into a separate microphone and where is it plugged in?

Audacity 1.2 is really old software and is no longer being upgraded or patched. Try downloading and installing 1.3. You can load both on your computer as long as you don't run them at once.

Do you get both sets of bouncing lights in the sound meters and can you hear both sides of the performance?

There is another posting from someone whose microphone just won't go off. Are you running Skype or other "telephone" program that needs to take over the microphone in order to work right?
