Re: Audacity won't show a waveform, but why?
Audacity is a slave to system audio settings and sometimes that shows up in strange ways. Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Input That should be set to whatever you're planning to use for your audio source. Some installs have an audio meter right there in the panel and it needs to show...

<<<I began working on an imported .wav file>>>
[from the original post]
Let's take this a different way. Where was the imported file when you first opened Audacity to begin the work and where is it now?

Re: lost most of the file during EXPORT AS WAV
<<<I'm having the exact same problem! >>> I don't think that's correct. The first poster was trying to capture a live recording. You are trying to manage a downloaded MP3. At the end of the day, you both had similar symptoms, but we have to worry about the beginning of the day as well. <<<unfortunat...

You missed an important piece of information. Do an INFO on your hard drive. No hard drive should be over 90% full.

Re: lost sound after saving .aup file
What he said. Audacity Projects are Production Management Environments. Not sound files. All original capture files as well as the obvious AUP file and the stuff in the _Data folder can make up a project. If your project is big enough, you may have stuff sprayed all over your computer and it's the j...

<<<a .wav file again, and that will enable me to return to Audacity with multiple tracks and continue working from where I left off?>>> No. It won't. The exported WAV will only be a stereo version of your show so far. There isn't any good way to do what you're doing with good stability, reliability,...

Re: Audacity won't show a waveform, but why?
<<<then it will record through and external mic>>> Which Mac have you got and which OS? Most modern Macs do not support external microphones. I count four programs struggling to manage your sound services. Two of those are intended to rip control away from everybody else. I would straighten that out...

Re: Audacity don't recording cassettes anymore
It looks to me that Audacity/Vista has lost the ability to "shift" the sound card between Microphone and Line levels. The fact that you can bring the levels down and they still remain dense and distorted indicates to me that the damage is happening upstream--before the control point. It's ...
