Re: Audacity Won't Export...
Audacity 1.2.5 opens your original MP3 file and can export other waves and MP3s and segments. The project does open up in Audacity 1.3.5 (surprised the heck out of me) and after a little system sturm und drang because of crossed versions, I can export as anything and select segments and export those...

Re: How to test an mp3 file?
You know the show on a Music CD isn't MP3, right? It's CDA which is a close cousin to Microsoft WAV format. 44100, 16 bit, Pulse Code Modulation (PCM). So a straight CD rip is a WAV file, not an MP3. You can make an MP3 from that, but as you're finding out, MP3 is a destructive process and any MP3 y...

Re: Strong Noise when recording
Hello, and welcome to the Great USB Turntable Club. Once it starts acting funny, you're pretty much dead as far as using the USB connection. However many people found they can continue on with analog connections. We assume your computer has a "Stereo Line-In" connection, and not just Mic-I...

Re: Extreme DC Offset
<<<Is there any way to test for the presence of radio waves?>>> Yes, most computers go crazy in the presence of intense radio waves. Just kidding. Yes, there are radio detectors and you can get a Non-Ionizing Radiation Hazard team into your house to check it out. All very expensive. Let's see how yo...

Re: Extreme DC Offset
The ThinkPad should be able to support a plain microphone plugged into the side. I would do that before connecting the machine to the internet. Once you start to involve the internet and recording on-line presentations, you throw a lot of additional complications into the mix, not the least of which...

Do you live near any tall radio towers? Take the ThinkPad to your mom's house in the next town and try it there.

How long does it take for the system to log me out automatically? It's generally enough time to do whatever I need, but it would be good to know.

OK. That opened. While I dig through this, you know you can read the AUP file in almost any text editor, right? That can tell you stuff, although it hasn't told me anything yet. This is a simple one where I did a screen grab. Left channel is on top. http://kozco.com/tech/audacity/aup1.jpg Koz

Re: Error while opening sound device.
Not quite. The last time my Audacity did that to me, the number of sound channels listed in Audacity was reset to 4...somehow. In Preferences, your sound should be 44100, 16-bit, 2-channel (Stereo).

There is another magic control panel that opens up with more options if you right-click in the right place. I don't know any more about it than that. It's a programming "Easter Egg" that somebody discovered. Maybe Google...?
