Re: weird audio distortion upon playback
Have you tried trashing the Audacity Preference File? It makes Audacity start over from First Birthday without actually reinstalling the program. Given you're on OS-X, I think you're way too eager to slash, burn, and wipe out the whole world to solve problems. OS-X is based on a Linux variation and ...

Re: Crash recovery - No .aup file!
<<<How do I recover this project without a .aup file?>>> I don't know anybody that's ever recovered a crashed recording under any circumstances. The way Audacity manages recordings biases it strongly against disaster recovery. <<<Have I lost this 15 hour recording?>>> That would be my guess. The for...

Re: Improving CD 44.1kHz/16bit audio
<<<Required sampling rate is 2.6 times the highest frequency...>>> What he said. One of the tricks they pull is your complete inability to tell whether anything over 16.9 KHz is distorted or not. Given that you are a Super Being that can hear 16.9 KHz in the first place, in order to hear distortion,...

Re: Improving CD 44.1kHz/16bit audio
There is a pretty good explanation of digital sampling right here in the Audacity system. http://audacityteam.org/manual-1.2/tutorial_basics_1.html The third illustration down is a pure tone (like a flute). The dots represent the "samples" that the electronics used to digitally record the ...

Re: Beginner sound problems
<<<The sound quality is very poor so I'm wondering if I need to purchase an external sound card?>>> I'd be interested in finding out out what you're doing. Are you singing into the built-in microphone? You're on a PC laptop, right? Give us a push. What kind of sound work are you doing? Koz

Cutin' and Pastin'
It seems when you stop your cursor on the timeline, the time location is printed out on a little strip at the bottom of the work window. Those numbers will not copy and paste as near as I can tell. It's paper and pencil time? Somebody posted with a project that requires putting sound duration number...

Re: Exporting measurements?
The numbers inside the time and duration panels don't cut and paste, do they? There's a feature request for the next Audacity.

Re: Improving CD 44.1kHz/16bit audio
When I went through school--with Edison--the Nyquist value was 2.6. You needed at least 2.6 digital sample points in any waveform to reconstruct the original analog signal from the digital data. Now, it's universally considered to be 2.0. The electronics didn't get any better, it was just recognized...

<<<If you have labels that mark regions>>>
Also known as "Edit Markers" rather than "Labels." Like the markers the video people use.

Re: recordings are flattened
<<<my husband's new laptop>>> ...that doesn't have a Line-In connection, only Mic-In. This usually happens when you apply a Line or High Level audio signal to a connection that's expecting microphone, or very low level sound. Many new laptops have Mic-In only. This works well when you use Skype and ...
