Very good writeup. However I would change the title.
"Recording Audio From Your Windows XP or Vista Computer."
The instructions won't do a thing for me on my Mac and the Linux people are over in the corner pouting. It doesn't affect any of my Windows 2000 machines, either.

Re: 3 questions
<<<q3: why doesn't audacity read and write 24 bit aif files?>>> We think that is an actual programming error. It mostly affects Macs. We hope a lot of these errors vanish in the new version 1.4. q2: is there a way to see the bit depth as well as the sample rate of a project in the lower bar? http://...

Re: Sudden and random loss of sound
Y'all are much more useful than you think you are. We keep lists of all the things that burn average users. "How come pieces of my show vanished" is right up there at the top of the problem list. Unfortunately, Audacity hit the perfect storm of inexperienced users encountering dangerous hi...

Re: Walkie talkie sound
It's a fairly standard equalization. Use the one for telephones. Drop everything lower than 300 and higher than 3000. The thing that puts two-way radio over to the audience is squelch trails. Hello Transmission, this is Remote Two in Marina Del Rey ththththP! Remote Two, go ahead thththP! Where the ...

Re: Audio track playing slow
If Audacity doesn't know what it's doing, it will try to play a music file the best way it knows how. If it doesn't work, then that's the way it is.
Try converting the mystery Raw work to a standard music format before importing. That generally works a lot better.

Re: Sudden and random loss of sound
<<<That kind of instablility makes me want to move to another program.>>> Go. Audacity is working exactly as it was designed to work. During management of a Project, Audacity is fast and efficient because it doesn't have to load and play giant music files. It just has to manage appropriate tiny frag...

Re: Lexicon Omega vs. M-Audio Fast Track Pro (URGENT! PLZ HE
Whatever you buy has to say "Supplies 48v Phantom Power to the microphone." I can't see where the M-Audio says that. Your microphone needs that to work. I can't find the Lexicon instructions.

Re: LAME MP3 NOT WORKING ON MY MAC HELP!
Yes, for, what, the fourth time? Audacity 1.2.6 is not an upgrade from 1.2.5. You need to be running the right Audacity and have the right lame. Just one of the two won't do it. There is possible to have the wrong Audacity and it will seem to work, but little odd parts of the program won't work here...

Re: left-Right Channel Balance?
<<<I've tried the L-R control and it only affects PLAYBACK here. Did nothing for recording volume.>>> Right. It's a post-production tool. Audacity doesn't do anything in real time -- during the recording. I swear my Windows 2000 machines have a balance control as part of the sound control panels. Ar...
