Re: The Letter 'Z'
<<<Anyone seen this little bug creep in on them?>>> It's not a bug, although it's gaining on it. Audacity traps certain keystrokes for use in keyboard shortcuts. Sometimes the process doesn't go so well. I believe Audacity 1.3.x stores its preferences in a file called audacity.cfg. Trash that file o...

Re: mp3 - poor quality, since upgrading to 1.3
<<<I just save as WAV >>> No, you don't. You Export as WAV. That's a sore point between the users and the developers. We note that the MP3 presets are very different between the two versions. Are you setting the same values (as much as possible) in both? It's very difficult to tell the additional op...

Re: how to equalize the volume?
If we were doing this on the moon, we'd be done by now. If you want that kind of control, I think you'd be very disappointed with the automatic tools. I also don't quite believe that Normalize thing didn't work. That tool will get you very close very rapidly. Anyway, put all your songs on one timeli...

Re: WAV not recognized
I would be really surprised if the camera was producing a WAV file. While very high quality, they take up enormous amounts of room in memory and would cause storage problems immediately in a small, portable device. Consult your instructions as to what you really have. If it's a newer camera, My SWAG...

Re: New To Program And Needs Help
Some audio programs let you choose the compression amount at the point of export. Audacity doesn't do that. It sets the compression in Preferences > File Formats. Remember MP3 is destructive. It gets the smaller file sizes by reducing musical quality. And it's permanent. You can't ever go back up to...

Re: Please Help Soundcard/Mic Problems
Don't throw out the packing material. USB microphones turn analog audio into digital right inside the microphone and aren't subject to interference problems inside the computer. So if it is really a USB microphone, the computer is mostly out of the equation. If you're on a Windows machine, I would l...

Re: Cassette duplication
<<<1) Is it possible to daisy-chain cassette recorders to create multiple copies of cassettes from the computer or CD player?>>> You're making audio cassettes? Voluntarily? Ahem. It's possible to do that, but rarely desirable. Each cassette machine will receive the accumulated distortion of all the ...

Re: does my imaginary amplifier/compressor exist?
The threshold has to be set higher than normal presentation, but lower than the microphone smack. The additional gain reduction (ratio) will only apply to the noise.

Re: noise reduction sampling crashes audacity 1.3.5
Noise Reduction numbers between 15dB and 25dB. I think that one was 25.
Frequency Smoothing numbers between 20 and 760. I think that one was 200.
Attack/Decay always zero.
Gale Andrews has some notes on this:

Your assignment is to find the user instructions on-line--usually a PDF file.
