<<<It's very tedious and quite painstaking.>>>
But not tedious enough for you to do what I asked?
It's not latency. Latency is the same delay over the whole performance. You very probably have a broken sound card.

Re: How to get effects..
<<<select some audio on the timeline>>> Click on the blue waveforms anywhere you want to start your work. Hold the (left) mouse button down and drag sideways, then let go. Everything between those two places is "selected" and will respond to effects, management, or other tools. It should a...

Re: Split-channel music
Most time--well over 50%--you can't do that. The singing voices are so buried in the performance with echo and special effects, they will never come out. However, if it's a simple performance with no effects and the singer(s) are in the middle, you might try the Center Pan Remover. Center Pan Remove...

Re: WMP hesitates
You may find that many tools like Silence Finder work a lot better in Audacity 1.3 than in earlier 1.2. They've never worked well. You really need to find out what's really happening. <<<I know can usually be caused by doing too much other stuff on your computer while playing music>>> Yes, and that ...

Re: how to drag a song, to make it longer..
Audacity isn't interactive that way. You can't scrub, either. I think Effect > Change Tempo will make a song get longer.

Re: Additional Tracks Gradually Out of Sync
There have been sound cards that use different time base electronics for record and for playback. People who record their guitar solo and then burn it straight to a CD will never know that the song on the CD is actually slightly longer or shorter than the actual performance. You will know because yo...

Re: recording "right" side as mono
That behavior depends completely on the sound while it's still analog. So yes, you're going to have to tell us exactly which M-Audio device you have.

Re: can someone explain latency and how to compensate for it
<<<direct all my audacity files to be saved to a USB back up drive>>> You can do that with a FireWire drive which was designed for that sort of thing, but not USB. USB external drives like to pause every few minutes and powder their nose. Blammo, there goes the show. USB drives are good for long ter...

Re: Stereo to mono
Black Down Arrow on the left > Split Stereo Tracks.
Select and copy all the sound in the valuable track > paste it into the blank track.
Black Down Arrow on the left > Make Stereo Track.
Technically, that gives you a two-track mono performance which is what I think you really want.

Re: Audacity Doesn't Display
Since I'm completely stumped, let's try something different. You can install 1.2 and 1.3 on your machine at the same time as long as you don't use them at once.
Install 1.2.
