<<<A lot of stumbling about by the pair of us koz, but I think you've finally caught it.>>> Something about the postings didn't sound quite right. There was critical information missing here and there, but the narrative was so well done that you really didn't miss it. Every so often, the post would ...

Re: Cannot open .wav or .mp3 with Audacity after upgrade
And you only have to do that in 1.2. 1.3 and any Audacity version on any other platform keeps preferences in a neat preference file suitable for trashing.
Only 1.2-Windows made the mistake of putting preferences in the Dreaded Windows Registry.

Your Windows file associations are scrambled.
.DOC = Word for Windows
.PUB = Microsoft Publisher
.PSD = PhotoShop
Consult your Windows instructions or wait for one of the Windows helpers here. I used to know how to fix that.....

<<<Record out phono plug to a 1/8 microphone jack on the laptop.>>> <<<recording from a cd player >>> I'm re-evaluating this whole question. Since both of your two postings were identical, I deleted one of them. I'm working on going to bed, but tomorrow, I'll give it what for--assuming nobody else gets there first..

Re: Noise Removal
I'm re-evaluating my opinion of the little StarTech. My first experiences were quick and dirty affairs with what may have been a ratty microphone. In much more controlled conditions, it's OK. It is a pretty simple device, but if you need one computer style microphone in to one computer, this may be ...

<<<Doesn't the "software playthrough" option get round that one koz?>>>
Shucks. And I was doing so well, too.
I have no idea, but I'm guessing no. Playthrough delivers Audacity Output to the speakers for sing-alongs. It doesn't manage input audio--but I'll see.
