On a PC? a DLL is a Dynamic Link Library which is a Microsoft Windows information file. That's not to say that other programs can't use them, but I'd be surprised.

A good first guess at sound specifications is 44100, 16-bit, and Stereo. Not everybody supports 32-bit floating.

On the quickest possible guess with no information, I would think you had either a hard drive or memory problem. No program brings OS-X to its knees without a hardware fault.
