The video people use the crossfade tricks. They edit at the video frame boundaries whether the sound matches or not. I think the official note on this one is plugins. Did you install plugins past the ones that came with Audacity?

Make sure USB Audio CODEC is selected in that Systems Preferences panel.

It's pretty unusual for the audio service to die at this step. Did you buy the mixer new? Do the headphones work?
