Sometimes Audacity requires you to restart the program for new settings to "stick." And in the case of the Windows version, yes, nothing happens until you press OK.

Exactly which Audacity do you have? All three numbers.

Re: How to turn down playback volume while recording?
I bet you're going to find that the slider you're looking for is buried in the Windows Control Panel. I also bet you're going to find that recording and producing with one computer doing everything is going to be so awkward that you'll invest in speakers with volume controls on them...like I did. An...

<<<HP Pavilion, a1520N>>>
You know you can buy a third-party sound card and put it in. I don't know how to deal with conflicts on a Windows machine, but we routinely do that with Linux machines to get better sound, so I know the computer will not explode if you do that.

Re: phantom power
<<<The phantom power supplied by computer sound card microphone sockets is 5 volt, and is not sufficient to power the SM86.>>> Plus the sound card isn't electrically balanced and the battery isn't "phantom" because it goes up to the microphone on its own wire--or at least that's how it was...

Re: Need Some Really Good Speakers
So just about everybody starts the count for reasonably serious monitoring at something above $250.
You are looking at good headphones and save your pennies.

Re: How Do I Record And Listen At The Same Time?
It's a setting in Audacity and it's slightly different depending on your computer, but I would totally use headphones anyway. Before I dig for it, please be clear that single computer management of multi-track sound is always going to have "Latency." Even if you do manage to record multipl...

Re: 1.3.x vs 1.2.6
Over and above Feature Creep, 1.3 keeps its preferences in a preference file rather than try to wrestle with the Dreaded Windows Registry. In English that means if you have a damaged Audacity 1.2 program on a Windows machine, it's almost impossible for normal humans to fix it. In 1.3, you drag the p...

Re: Playback during recording
Reinstalling Audacity 1.2 on a Windows machine isn't that easy. It's the only Audacity where the preferences are held in the Dreaded Windows Registry. When Audacity becomes damaged, it stops being able to manage the Registry so the error gets burned in. Further, any new Audacity you install takes on...
