This error usually happens on the Left which makes me think you may have other problems, but...
Audacity wakes up from First Birthday in mono. Reset in Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O > Recording > Two Track (Stereo).
Restart Audacity.

I'm just reading that again. Yes, that's a very old feature request. At any time in the editing, press - 4 0 0 [enter] and the cursor backs up four seconds. No need to go find the mousie or to click any special keys. Cursor offsets are always active.
