Audacity Projects refer back to the original sound files, and that's if you opened up the Project. If you're opening an exported WAV or MP3 file, you're pretty much dead.

http://www.kozco.com/tech/soundtests.html The pink nose file near the bottom of that page is a well behaved 48000, 32Float, Stereo wav file made on Cool Edit 2000.
