Audacity doesn't do anything in real time except record. It's a post production editorial tool.

Re: Trying to record over reording please help
Do you record performances from the internet? The settings for that tend to be antagonistic toward live recording. You have Audacity set to record "Mix Out" or something similar. It's not recording just your voice, it's recording the entire computer playback giving you echos, odd feedback,...

Re: Stereo to Mono, .wav size limit?
The absolute largest a standard WAV file can get is 4GB due to the internal structures. Some systems limit file sizes to 2GB. You may be running out of hard drive space. The machine must be able to handle high quality fast data some three or four times the size of the show. Do you have 4GB of high q...

Re: No audio/playback (imported music)
<<<I've imported an mp3 file >>> Probably not. Since Audacity knows what MP3 files are, you probably have Something Else. You can Inspect your file by right-click > Properties > Additional Info or Sound Format. Windows also "helps you" by hiding the filename extension. You see "Music&...

Re: no signal when recording original music
Audacity 1.3 has those. Not 1.2. You can have both versions on your machine as long as you actually use only one at a time. You are listening to the latency of your computer. That's what one round trip through your computer sounds like. Every time the computer has to stop and think a second, you los...

Re: Display measure information
There are tools that claim to tell you beats per minute, but most of the time they're wrong. Can you ask that again and use different words?

Re: How to identify media file types.
Gee, Steve, can't I force Windows to show me the real music filename--with extension--instead of hiding it from me?

Re: Recording from vinyl - background distortion always ther
<<<I can now detect a low level of distortion>>> Just to get our ducks in a row... You get distortion in an existing signal. "This flute sounds fuzzy and distorted." Empty sound channels have noise, a signal that comes out that you didn't put in. "How come I hear a hiss even though th...

Re: Hang when importing aiff file
I may create something in Cool Edit and then see if everybody agrees on what it really is. CE2K will manage 32-bit floating.
It will not, however, manage 24-bit. I wonder if Audition will do that. I bought the Audition upgrade and never used it other than to see if it worked. It does.

Re: Record and Playback Speed
Yo! Listen up!
Everybody go into Audacity Preferences and make sure your bit depth is set to 16-bit and not 32-bit floating. Audacity wakes up from First Birthday in 32-bit floating and that makes unstable MP3 files.
