Re: Laptop Line-in vs. Microphone-in

Some Windows laptops have one audio input that can switch between two different services -- Microphone and Line. You need to go into the laptop hardware services to figure out what to do. Some of these services allow you to change the hardware in the Windows control panel. Line-In typically is high ...

Re: Can't download music

<<<a big screech.>>>

That's usually just Audacity trying to play Apple AAC compressed sound files. For the solution in all cases, See: McBride.

Re: Error opening project

Here's a thread where somebody figured out how to fix this. It does involve writing XML code in TextEdit. First, open TextEdit and make sure it's preferences are Plain Text and not Rich Text. Then go find your AUP file that goes with the show. Scroll down through the lines of text/code until you fin...

Re: Error opening project

As to the first part of the question. Given how complicated Audacity Projects can be, the most likely reason for not being able to open one is Human Interaction. Not only do Projects manage billions of files, but they manage directory and folder locations, too. It is possible for a Project to become...

Re: Error opening project

People think Audacity is a WAV editor and it saves music files. It's not and it doesn't. Audacity is an Editorial Production Environment Manager. What. An Audacity Project consists of a bunch of files, some music, some not, that when coordinated by a manager (the AUP file) will produce an editable s...

Re: Can't replay WAV files

Audacity likes to default to 44100, 32-bit floating, Mono. This is less than useful and sometimes causes problems with other programs. Change in Audacity preferences to 44100, 16-bit, Stereo (the music CD audio standard) and see what happens. Try a new short recording. <<<but have no assured way the...

Re: Newbie on the forum. Need some mic help please.

It is only one sound device, so it really only produces one sound channel. Most sound cards that record a microphone put it on both channels because that's what most people want. I'm surprised your computer doesn't do that. The quick as a bunny work-around is record it in stereo, split the tracks, c...

Re: Problem when exporting

Did you leave Audacity Preferences in 44100, 32-bit floating? There have been cases of 32-bit sound causing MP3 problems. Change the preferences to 44100, 16-bit, Stereo, or better yet, 48000, 16-bit, Stereo, the television standard. Record some fresh work, process it and see if the MP3s sound bette...

Re: frozen record cursor

<<<I reload the program , but it does the same thing.>>> By reloading the program, you really mean finding and trashing the audacity.cfg file, right? Reloading the actual program doesn't do anything. <<<What is the problem?>>> I would guess the machine is looking for clear, clean hard drive space to...
