Re: Remove background music from taped conversation
<<<Maybe a way to "minimise" the music?>>> Nope. This is the same problem of people who want to pull only certain segments of a mixed, produced, finished musical performance. Unless it was done with a dramatic stereo microphone system or produced in a specific type of stereo, you're stuck....

Re: ARGH! Why am I getting SNAP! CRACKLE! POP!?!?
Is the latest MP3 produced from a 32-bit floating master? We've had troubles with that. The MP3 files become unstable and may not play correctly on everybody's player. Reset or resample down to 16 bit.

Re: How To Clean Up This Song?
It's in better quality than I thought it was going to be, but it does have one very serious problem. The left and right channels are out of phase. That will kick the bass notes in the knees right away, on top of sounding hollow and weird. Split the left and right, invert the right channel Effect > U...

Re: Some technique of Audacity I would like to know
<<<How do you play a song backwards?>>> In Audacity 1.3 you might try selecting the song and Effect > Speed Change > -100%. That's Minus one hundred percent. Or use one of the other duration tools like that. It doesn't work in Audcity 1.2, but yours might. <<<How do you mix two or more songs togethe...

Re: Bad sound quality in MP3 format
MP3 gets its small file sizes by damaging the sound. The smaller the file, the worse the damage.
In Audacity 1.3, you have the ability to set the MP3 quality at export. Very good to excellent results can be had with a bitrate around or over 200 (192-225).

Re: Really awful sound quality on some tracks
So it's not a USB turntable? You, at least have a fighting chance to make it through your collection in good condition before the system expires. If you have a reasonable quality original turntable, your results will be vastly better than the us$100 turntable people.

Re: "Save" button in "export" dialogue box is grayed out
This is after you type the filename, right? Did you do something messy in the filename? Upper and lower case letters, numbers, underscore and dash only. No other characters can be used. I need my work to survive transit to all three computer platforms, so I don't use spaces either. my_piano_solo-200...

Re: Really awful sound quality on some tracks
USB Turntable, right? Those die all the time. Disconnect the USB and restart the Mac. Get the adapter cables that allow your turntable analog outputs to connect to the Mac Line-In. Usually something like this... USB Turntable--Analog Solution http://audacityteam.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=22...

Re: Remove background music from taped conversation
Give up. Record it again. You picked one of the non-recoverable damages.
The four horsemen are echoes, overload (clipping), underload (noise), and acoustical interference (your problem). Almost always fatal.
