Chris's Compressor is highly recommended. It has the same affect as a radio station's compressors -- it goes both ways, bringing up the low bits and squashing the high ones. I change the Compression number to .77 from .5 and otherwise leave it alone.

Some of the current laptop models have removed the ability to record streaming sound. On Windows machines, I use Total Recorder to get around that.

Re: Equalizer Curves
Default Presets, or more varied selections inside the menu? I'm always looking for or reconstructing the 100Hz low pass rumble filter, and the 300-3000 telephone filter is popular. A little more exotic would be the AM Radio filter 20-5000. You could put a DC Removal filter in here, too, or list it a...

Re: 1.3 on XP hangs on export
Search your machine for audacity.cfg and drag that to the trash. Restart Audacity. You know you've "reinstalled" audacity when it asks you "English?" at startup.
Export should give you a Metadata panel and then a save panel from which you can select the type of export.

There's a setting in Audacity Preferences called...
Edit > Preferences > Audi I/O > [X] Do Not Modify Device Settings.

Re: Anyway to disable AU support for audacity?
<<<my powercore plugins seem to take ages scanning as well.>>> We're all ignoring the real complaint. Audacity does not take ages to start. If it does, then we need to take steps to fix that. Do you run MacJanitor or do you know how to run 'Periodic' manually? If you haven't done that in a long time...

<<<Here's a follow-up question that reflects sheer desperation: >>> Nope. It's still desperately true that the best you can do is turn "Update Display" back on and the timeline will lurch forward in whole screens while you play. It will not smoothly scroll. That would take up enormous amou...

Re: New Audacity user needs help to record his guitar
Without going back over the whole thing... Does the GuitarPort have a software driver or separate interface software? Does it have its own recorder? If it does, there may be a reason for that.

Re: How to avoid noise
<<<i use my digital camera thing>>> I predict (pressing fingers to forehead) that the bass guitar and kick drum are overloading the sound track in your camcorder. All the bass notes are crunchy and distorted and the drum pops instead of making drum sounds? You generally don't recover from that. You ...

Re: 1.3 on XP hangs on export
<<<I've uninstalled and reinstalled.>>> Probably not. You reinstall Audacity by trashing the audacity.cfg file and restart Audacity, not by dumping the whole program. If you didn't dump the config file, then the new Audacity will wake up with all the problems the old one had. Forget MP3, can you Exp...
