And the mixer is.....?

Does it make any difference which gets turned on first, the mixer or the computer?

Has it ever worked reliably? This is the kind of problem that can result from a bad or ratty USB connection...Or a dead or dying mixer.

Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Input

Select the turntable or the USB chipset you don't recognize. Play something. Does the Apple sound meter bounce?

Give it a shot. Record somebody talking in front of the camera for five seconds. Stop. Cover the hole with, say masking tape, and shoot another five seconds. I don't think it will change the waveforms any, but when you play the composite track, the voice should be the only thing left. Windows drivers may not give you the microphone boost option. Boost arrives with the manufacturer of the card and the software drivers. You need to see if you can find the right drivers for your card model number.
