You did miss quite a few steps in the middle there. You got the bouncing red meters and then you pressed stop and got the blue waves on the timeline. Audacity Projects are not sound files, They're management pointers to your original sound file, which you probably moved or deleted. If you put it back and in the original name, the show should come back to life (restart Audacity). When it does, Export As WAV to get an actual sound file that you can...

You can set up Windows Control panel to feed the computer's speaker feed directly to Audacity. At least most PC computers can do that. Some of the newer ones intentionally removed this process.
