Re: Audacity Compact (english edition)

<<<OK, I've paid my $29 bucks for the user manual>>> To who? Audacity and all the documentation I'm aware of is free. <<<unless I can shorten the cycle by going A2D on the LPs at 45 rpm (about 35% faster than taking them in at 33.3333 rpm) and then dropping the pitch/speed back down to 33.3, LP spee...

Re: How to make voice sound like im in a gasmask

You can get a good first start by using the Low Pass Filter set for about 2000 or 3000. Experiment. The voice will sound more muffled as the number goes down.

Wait. It's not a minute. I think it's ten seconds. I gotta go look that up.

Re: How to REMOVE Music but KEEP vocals?

You want vocal isolation. I think at least one of these packages claims to be able to do that. Voice Removal or Isolation --Center Pan Remover (Voice Remover--Search the page for "Center Pan Remover") http://audacityteam.org/download/nyquistplugins --Voice Trap http://www.cloneensemble.com...

Re: Trying to make a good 'narrator' voice sound

<<<How permissive should I be of an occasional red?>>> Occasional red being a VU meter red or a digital signal meter hitting "0?" US-ANSI VU meters are supposed to gently hit red on occasion. That's how they work. Digital red represents permanent destruction of the quality of the sound. Th...

Re: A Few Questions about 1.2.6

I'm going with no. Audaciy 1.2 is a pretty simple program. About the best you can do is record a new segment and then cut and paste it into the existing show. It's a common newbie idea that you make shows by recording the whole thing beginning to end, tie a bow on it and go home. That only works if ...

Re: Level Volume on Cheap Speakers vs High-Quality Speakers

<<<And then I want to match my voice volume to the music volume, which seems trickier.>> It's very tricky. All the effects tools work on waveform construction, not loudness. One of the advantages of the old-school US VU meters was that they did, more or less, respond to loudness in the show. The spe...

Re: Cannot open Project File

<<<I cannot open the file back up.>>> That's because it's not "a file." Audacity projects are managed by the AUP file. It's job it to point to all the other parts of your show -- all the clips, songs, snippets, and performances. It's not a sound file. You can't move the AUP, the project, o...

Re: mp3 export weirdness

Exactly. MP3 is something of a violin, too. In the hands of a musician it can make grown men cry, but the "violin" setting on your keyboard might make a musician cry. In the wild, lame has hundreds of controls, settings, and variations, only one of which is bitrate -- although that is the ...

Re: Trying to make a good 'narrator' voice sound

Another note. The SM58 is a directional microphone and has proximity effect. The bass goes way up when you get closer. Also called the Rock Band in a Small Club effect. The lead singer comes out and introduces the band and knocks over beer glasses in the first three tables. It's very hard to control...
