<<<Mono was already the setting>>>
Restart Audacity. Some of the Preference settings don't stick until you restart.

Re: Audacity Killed My Sound
Generally, when Windows encounters a USB Sound Device, it assumes record...and playback. So it's probably sending your Nine Inch Nails playback out to the turntable instead of the speakers. Fix in Windows Control Panel. Windows Control Panel http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Mixer_Toolbar...

Re: Recording time vs HD space
To contrast that. We recently installed a six channel, high definition, h.264 television surveillance system that will keep a month of continuously cycling storage on relatively modest hard drives and make it available to several people at the same time with web access. The box was obviously built t...

Re: Separate tracks when recording
<<<All you need to do is to place a label at each track break - use the Ctrl-B shortcut - and don't forget to place a label right at the beginning for the first track.>>> Also known as putting a label at the beginning of each song. Audacity doesn't support Markers or Edit Points -- at least not dire...

Re: Recording time vs HD space
Oh, the original question. Roughly 700MB per hour for an hour long show at 44100, 16-bit Stereo. Many operating systems start having file management problems at 2GB and 4GB, so there's that. You posted in the Windows forum, but I would so be doing this with a modern Mac. FireWire management of a 1TB...

Re: Recording time vs HD space
I'm going with no. I think the limiting factor is storage, and not just size. Audacity needs clean, fast, error-free places to put its work and it needs it in a timely manner. Sooner or later, the drives are going to fill up and change characteristics. It's the characteristics that kill you. Surveil...

Re: MP3 file size
I bet you think you cut your original MP3 file. You didn't. Audacity converts the work into a much larger internal production to get the tools to work, then you asked it to make a whole new MP3 file. MP3 production is a cook, not a mathematician. Little bit of this, little bit of that. A good way to...

Re: Recording is Silent
We progress. That's a straight analog headset and microphone, without doubt powered from the microphone connection on the sound card (pink, maybe). The headset is pretty ordinary except for the volume control. http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/B000OAFYVG/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_0...

Re: edit program
I usually write all this each time, but somebody already posted steps.

You should be in Audacity 1.3. The noise removal tools in Audacity 1.2 were very early, poor, and didn't work terribly well.
