You got blue waves and a dancing sound meter? Do you have a USB microphone? Sometimes USB/Digital microphones confuse Windows.
See if there's anything in here to help.

Re: VOX
Not in 1.2, no. I believe there's one in 1.3.
You can have both versions on your computer as long as you only use one at a time. 1.3 projects will not open up in 1.2
Here it is. Preferences > Smart Recording.

Re: Losing Sound Quality Like Mad
We need to be able to visualize the system. <<<I've tried 2 different microphones and 2 different versions of Audacity and I'm still getting the same problem.>>> Which two versions and which microphones? How are they connected? What type of computer? Model number? We do this help business by buildin...

<<<I'm still not very clear how common this type of clipping is in the wild.>>> It's common enough to make this one of the longest forum threads...ever. The people over on the video forums would kill to be able to "repair" clipping. The broadcast sound levels were chosen to be very robust ...

<<<I have a biiiig audacity file>>> Is that what killed you? How big is your hard drive and how much empty space to you have? Re: To Upgrade or not?
The answer to the question of which way to go may be yes. You can install both 1.3 and 1.2 on your machine as long as you only use one at a time. You can't open a 1.3 project in 1.2. 1.2 is familiar to you and seems to be stable, so you should continue to do your production in that. However, the ins...

Re: Won't export
This is where Windows helping you is no help. Do you have Windows set to show you File Extensions? Let's start there. Right Click My Computer > Explore > Tools > Folder Options > View > [ ] Unclick Hide Extensions... Apply to All Folders OK. The last time I exported an MP3 file from Audacity, it mad...

Re: Bizarre behavior
What kind of USB microphone? Model numbers?
Does your laptop (it is a laptop, right?) have a built-in microphone?
What's the capacity of the hard drive and how much free do you have?
The Windows people should be along shortly, but I thought I'd get that out of the way up front.

Re: "failed...configuration incorrect"
<<<Have tried reinstalling w/various approaches. Any ideas?>>> Was one of the approaches to trash the audacity.cfg file? That's how you reinstall Audacity, not trashing the program. All the personality, configurations, and settings are held in that one file. Trash it and Audacity will start from Fir...
