Re: Help for Novice
You might try Chris's Compressor as a download plugin. It does a terrific job leveling out a radio show. http://pdf23ds.net/software/dynamic-compressor/ I usually increase the compression from 0.5 to 0.8 for my jobs. Or you can try to do it manually with the Envelope Tool. Put the show on the timeli...

Re: Widening/Narrowing stereo image?
One of the hidden problems with developing tools is the interface. Without the pretty pictures, sliders, and adjusters, there's no way to tell ahead of time what you're doing. What does 20% greater separation sound like? How do you know you got 20%? Like driving down the road with your eyes closed a...

Re: Widening/Narrowing stereo image?
It might be. That's the philosophy of FM Radio which actually transmits Mono and Separation to your home, not Left and Right. There are tools in Audacity to do each of these steps manually. It's pretty painful, but it can be done. I can only assume Steve did it once successfully, wrote it all down, ...

Re: filtering streaming audio
Oh, and Audacity doesn't do anything in real time, so it's going to be five or six hours to process an hour performance and that's very conservative.
Commercial production generally plans ten to one. Ten hours of production to get a one hour show.

Re: Improving the sound of a real piano recording
We never explained what you did wrong. The only way to get a real sound file in Audacity is File > Export. Not Save.

Re: filtering streaming audio
Lots of slippery words there. <<<Is it possible to stream the audio portion into my computer>>> You can play the tapes on a connected player and capture the sound on your Mac or Large Deskside PC. Probably not your Windows Laptop. <<<filter out unwanted noise>>> Filter out unwanted noise. One. The n...

Re: Improving the sound of a real piano recording
Audacity doesn't save sound files. An AUP file is a project manager, not sound.
While we're waiting for that, describe the room, microphone and other capture details. Model numbers are good. Sound mixer?
What type of piano is it? Size? C7 concert grand Yamaha?

Re: editing menu items greyed out
The fuzzy generic advice is to stop using Audacity 1.2 on Vista. Audacity 1.2 has stopped development a long time ago and if you find a serious hole in it, give up. The current version is 1.3.8. http://audacityteam.org/download/ See if you can gracefully uninstall 1.2. You don't have to do that beca...
Re: File Size
Were you able to get windows to show you the whole filename? Many people think that "Sound FIles" are all MP3 because it's a little rough to interpret the Windows icons -- particularly since Windows sometimes scrambles them to "help" you. If you expose the filename extensions, yo...
Re: File Size
The larger size is what happens when you Export As WAV using Audacity default settings. That's a "real" sound file. The files you're used to are compressed and slightly damaged. MP3, WMA, AAC, M4A are all technologies to reduce the size of sound files, but they all add distortion and damag...
