Re: Recording problems..

Zero dB on the sound meter is misleading because it only measures the top half of the wave, not both sides. It's possible to have perfect bouncing lights meters and very serious distortion. This "peaking at zero" thing is achieved in post production using several different tools to achieve...

Re: Audacity created gigantic mp3 file

<<<Is there any way to make this file smaller, closer to it's original size? >>> Stop using Audacity. <<<the only thing I did was to delete 7 seconds>>> Well, no. What you actually did was import your MP3. Audacity uncompressed it to its original size, probably closer to 550MB. You operated on it an...

Re: AAC Options

You're right. That's totally bogus. The real values are Fair, OK, Good, Better, Best. Advanced encoders don't take an argument of Bitrate. The best you can do is get in the fuzzy ballpark. The encoders are highly front-loaded and you can't predict the output bitrate. The 256 ballpark for a stereo sh...

Re: Help, multi-channel recording problem

Audacity doesn't directly support ASIO.

There has only been one posting of someone who succeeded in getting multi-channel to work.

Re: no "invert" in my effect menu

<<<I saw the clip on youtube >>> Yes, quite a number of people saw that clip. They all went away thinking they could do this effect to every song every recorded. That demo was with one of the five songs ever recorded where it worked. <<<vocal remover but that f*cks up the complete song and the vocal...

Re: recording with sony pcm d50, then direct to cd

And please remember that 44100 is a compromise sample rate. It's only pure up to about 17 KHz and plays tricks to get the rest of the way to 20 KHz. That's why I use 48000 which will take you up to almost 19 KHz with no tricks. Everybody recognizes both. All the test samples on my web site are at 48...

<<<the -20 is, i think, pre-emphasis and came to us by law in connection with fm stations.>>> Don't believe that too much. It's the digital television standard and it doesn't have pre-emphasis. And it doesn't have any trouble making it to my living room in digital form... http://www.kozco.com/mytv/m...

Re: vst enabler runtime error

Take out the plugins. A badly written plugin will kill Audacity.

Re: Help identifying cable/jack

<<<is does have a microphone symbol next to it.>>>

That's still the wrong connector. You need to find the Line-In, frequently blue. That's the connection that handles high-level stereo music.

Re: Cleaning up a Acapella track

To be clear, during the singing? While the song is on the timeline, do the blue waves go all the way to the extremes of the graph? Do you get any thin red bars mixed in with the blue?

Where did the song come from?
