And please remember that 44100 is a compromise sample rate. It's only pure up to about 17 KHz and plays tricks to get the rest of the way to 20 KHz. Take out the plugins. A badly written plugin will kill Audacity.

That's still the wrong connector. You need to find the Line-In, frequently blue. That's the connection that handles high-level stereo music.

To be clear, during the singing? While the song is on the timeline, do the blue waves go all the way to the extremes of the graph? Do you get any thin red bars mixed in with the blue?
