Re: Recording volume problem
The output impedance of the average cassette machine is around 1000 ohms. There is a 10 to 1 intentional mismatch between that and the average line-in. It's cheap and it works as long as you don't need sound cables much over about ten feet. This also allows you to get "mono" by jamming Lef...

Re: Trying to Remove Vocals . . . Tried Tutorials . . .
Vocal removal doesn't actually work -- or almost never. There is a very long list of things you can do to screw it up. One of the things is to start with a two track mono show, which is what it sounds like you have. The show must be in stereo -- real stereo -- the singer must not have special effect...

<<<are there any known errors with the lame plugin?>>> Known Issues Volume 1 and Volume 2, Hardback, Houghton-Mifflin-Harcourt, New York. Soon available in paperback! This almost always means you have a mismatch somewhere. I'm not as familiar with the Windows problems. I'm the Mac Elf. We may need t...

Re: Recording Issues- Vista
<<<My Mic voice is very low and lacks good quality>>> We probably need to deal with that one independently of the other routing problems, since that one could be a dealbreaker. The SM58 is a perfectly delightful microphone, but it's a straight dynamic, moving coil type. For that mic to work with a s...

Re: Cleaning up a Acapella track
In Audacity 1.3, you could try the noise reduction tool. Select one of the really bad blasts of trash and use that as the Noise Profile. Be careful not to get any actual voice in there. Audacity will try to subtract the noise profile from the show. There's a remote chance that might help.

Re: Recording is Clipping
<<<the recordings are clipping.>>> How sure are you about that? Clipping happens at the exact time you say a word or sing a note. Data problems can be sprinkled all over the recording and not seem to have any relation to the song. Like if you sing one constant note, data problems will be sprinkled a...

Re: HELP - Recording with a MIDI keyboard!
<<<this is the kinda cable>>> Great cable, but it has nothing to do with sound. That's so your computer can press the keys on the keyboard. Given that the headphone connection on the back of the keyboard is 1/4" stereo, you need a cable that's 1/4" stereo to 1/8" stereo which should f...

Re: Problems with Pops and Squeaks on Recording Audio
The Behringer UCA202 is powered by the battery voltage inside the USB connection. If that's flaky or badly filtered, you can get the computer's electrical housekeeping processes overlayed with your show. I had an iMic that did that. Do the clicks roughly correspond with the drive light on the front ...

Re: Audacity created gigantic mp3 file
<<<it brought it back to around 7 megs. >>> To build on that. MP3 is a destructive compressor. Every time you get into and out of a highly compressed MP3 file, the damage goes up. Using a simple MP3 editor eliminates two compression passes. If really small files are important to you, you probably sh...
