Re: Recording maxes at half volume. Why?
<<<I'm getting told that it's a problem with Audacity>>> And they're probably right. Audacity doesn't support ASIO drivers. That and MP3 are licensed and paid software. The problem with ASIO is nobody made a work-around. If you can't find Windows drivers for your product, that's the way it is. Koz

Re: What exactly are the blue bars?
The green bouncing bars represent the sound volume on playback and the red bars on record. The blue wavy lines represent the actual sound sample points drawn as a graph. If you keep magnifying the blue waves, eventually, you'll get down to the PCM sample points which look like little squares on the ...

Re: Error - sound device problem
Another good tool. You know you got a fresh Audacity when it asks you "English?" at first birthday.

Re: Error - sound device problem
<<<2. Open audacity.cfg in a text editor and remove all the content except the line >>> That can be pretty dangerous. TextEdit wakes up in Rich Text form, not plain text. I can imagine creating a lot of problems that way. Audacity creates a lot of problems by starting up in 32-bit. 44100, 16-bit, St...

Re: Error - sound device problem
If your Mac is pretty old, the 1.2 preferences can be a little hard to find.

Re: Error - sound device problem
<<<I got rid of 1.2.6 - went up to 1.3.7>>>
Ding! First mistake. You can put both Audacity 1.2 and 1.3 on your machine as long as you only use one at a time. Open up Audacity 1.2 and see where your preferences are. Copy those over to 1.3. Can you roll your machine back?

Re: Problem with 2 USB mics as aggregated device
Maybe I do know this one. Audacity 1.2 wakes up in mono, not stereo. Reset in Preferences, then restart Audacity.

Re: using Audacity as a simple sound meter
If you go the comparison route, all you really need is to subject the meter and the microphone to the same sound. Write down the difference between the two readings. The difference should be consistent. The computer is always 12 dB low. Or the meter is always 15dB higher. Something like that. Since ...

Re: using Audacity as a simple sound meter
That was in dBSPL. Sound Pressure Level. That one is an absolute and there are special meters that can measure it and tell you numbers...like this. http://www.radioshack.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=sound%20meter&origkw=sound%20meter&sr=1 Work has the digital one and I have the analo...

Re: Problem with 2 USB mics as aggregated device
No. Like said. I've never seen this setting before and it may be days before I can get on a machine long enough to mess with it. We'll see if anybody else has any ideas. Intel Mac with Leopard?
