Audacity Preferences > Hardware Playthrough. Restart Audacity.

If that fails, try software playthrough. That's more likely to work, but that's the one with the sound delay.

It doesn't seem like it, but the spacing and direction of the dots in the waveform isn't random. That's what carries the quality and richness of a voice or musical instrument. Reverse them and the sound will get very harsh and buzzy -- like a bad USB data error.

Excellent. We have several of those at work and yes, they do have built-in microphones and will do an iChat session with no troubles. I can't think of a direction to go. We had troubles when we were shopping for headset microphones. Most of them were very quiet and didn't sound all that good. We settled on the Labtec headsets, but we were using the analog connections, not USB.

Did you install Skype in between? Skype is famous for taking over sound services and not putting them back.

Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Input. Is that setting still pointed to Built-In Microphone and does the blue ball sound meter jump when you talk?
