Missed a step.

You can install both 1.2 and 1.3 as long as you only use one at a time. Audacity 1.3 Projects will not open in 1.2.

Yes. Stop using Audacity 1.2 Modern Macs do not support Audacity 1.2. I'm comfortable with Audacity 1.3.7 from here... And just a note. AUP isn't a sound file. It's a Project Manger -- it's programming language. When the metadata window comes up, press the OK button and it will vanish. You can change the Audacity Preferences so that window will not pop up next time.

Edit > Preferences > Import/Export > Export Dialog (near the bottom).

The newest is 1.3.10, the most complete is 1.3.11. 1.3.10 has some export problems solved in 1.3.11. If you're happy with your current version stay there until 1.3.11 becomes the normal offered version.
