Macs don't support Hardware Playthrough. I use an external sound mixer.

You may never be able to make that go away entirely, but Audacity has preferences called Hardware Playthrough and Software Playthrough. It's a little more serious than that. Intel Macs under Leopard or Snow Leopard no longer fully support Audacity 1.2.

Now you know which pieces of the system are working, you can use that to decide which pieces aren't.
