Macs don't support Hardware Playthrough. I use an external sound mixer.

You may never be able to make that go away entirely, but Audacity has preferences called Hardware Playthrough and Software Playthrough. This determines what the computer is thinking about when it sends your own music back to you. Hardware Playthrough is pretty quick. That's the sound card in your co...

It's a little more serious than that. Intel Macs under Leopard or Snow Leopard no longer fully support Audacity 1.2.

Macs like to use their own built-in microphone. Which microphone do you think you're using and which Mac have you got? I'm typing on an Intel Mac-Mini OS-X 10.4.11
