Re: File size increase 3x when exporting as MP3
Audacity will not directly edit an MP3. It converts the MP3 to an Audacity internal high quality format and edits with that. When you want a new MP3, Audacity 1.3 offers you an MP3 export panel where you choose a new bit rate. If you choose a very high bitrate, then your new MP3 could be very much l...

<<<("Start compressing after "X" DB" is pretty much useless without a visual)>>>
See: Witchcraft.
Chris doesn't work in dB. All his settings are in percent. For my jobs, I change the first number, compression, from 0.5 to 0.77.

I have two different licenses of WireTap on my Macs and I have used SoundFlower and the Hard Wired Cable technique.
On the PCs, I use licenses of Total Recorder.

Re: New to Audacity... 1st posted question
At each major step in production, Export As WAV to get a different high quality sound file you can go back to if the show doesn't work out. People like to do production and destroy the original sound files as they go. I think that's crazy talk. One mistake and you have no show and no way to get one....

<<<people are on put on hold as a marketing tool>>> You put people on hold as a marketing tool? Don't they catch on after a while? Just kidding. If you have your voice clip prepared, Effect > Amplify > 0dB. If that's still not enough, you could try Chris's Compressor. http://pdf23ds.net/software/dyn...

<<<how would I know how much db to set in compression or limiting if I don't know how much db it is now?>>> A lot of the tools are end point oriented. "I want the show to end up here, wherever it started. Effect > Normalize or Effect > Amplify are grand masters at this. Put the show peaks at 0d...

Re: Basics- how to read the waveform(DB)
The default Audacity timeline is in percent 1 = 100%. This can be convenient as most of an audible show ends up in the top of this range, but it's so totally not the whole story. Your ears hear in dB, not percent. http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=19420&start=0&hilit=lim...

Re: cleaning up temp files
I think you got more problems than missing temp files. A four hour recording clocks in at just under 4GB of space. Pull the show into Audacity and export to MP3 and that can be 4 more. You need to keep 15% of your hard drive clear during production, so that's how much drive space? And not just space...

Re: Export then Burn mp3s in Order
Most Music CD burners have provision to change the order during the Authoring step. If you don't, they usually default to numeric or alphabetic according to binary, not human numbers. This can give you some strange music orders. track1, track10, track2... <<<I am "exporting multiple" as mp...
