Before you go completely crazy, does the computer act normally if you don't run Audacity? Can you play music CDs, Movie DVDs? Youtube? Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Input and Output. What are those two settings and how many devices are listed? Leave Audacity closed for a while. <<<...

Right click on the file > Properties > Extra or Advanced. What does Windows think of the file? Does it play in WIndows Media or free QuickTime Player?

That was incorrect. Audacity 1.2 and 1.3 will safely install on the same machine. You may not use both at the same time. Audacity 1.3 Projects will not open in 1.2.
