We're not ignoring you. You can't use standard Audacity tools for this -- certainly not anything in Audacity 1.2. You should install Audacity 1.3.11. Root around in Audacity Preferences and make sure they're set to 44100, 16-bit, Stereo. It might be set to 32-bit. Restart Audacity and see if you get the same error message when you try to record.
