Move the temp file back manually outside of Audacity. Once you mess with the Audacity Structure all sorts of messy things happen.

You can make Audacity start from First Birthday by trashing the config file. I have no idea where that is in Linux.

That steps dangerously close to the problem that Audacity doesn't do anything in real time except record and play. Not Record-Edit-Record -- at least not in the older version.

In Audacity 1.3.11, you have Append Record [Shift-R].

Do you have the switch on the back of the USB device set to Phono. Stop that. That's what's overloading. Set it to Line and the level problems should go away.

Audacity 1.3 has a Preference called Smart Recording. You can turn that off. Restart Audacity.
