Open the stereo track. The black arrow on the left is a drop-down menu and one of the options is Split Stereo Track. The others are obvious. You can assign any identity and recombine into a new stereo track.

Do you have "Snap-To" set in the bottom of the work window. Sudden, unexplained edit moves can be traced to that.
