I think the second technique, zoom, zoom, zoom, works in all the Audacity versions.

MIDI shouldn't be too hard. MIDI is only instructions how to press a key, not the actual sound. So if you "reversed" a MIDI command set: "Press B-Flat, Press F," It would come out "Press F, Press B-Flat." The song would appear perfect in every way except it would be goi...

There is a "Snap To" button at the bottom of the edit window. Turn it off.

The other way to do that is (after you export a safety WAV of the performance) select and delete everything before the performance going in tighter and tighter with the zoom tools Select > Control-E until there's nothing left. Do the same thing with the end. Control-F (zoom full) and straight Export...

If you know the numbers ahead of time, you can enter them into the time boxes at the bottom of the editor.
I've never actually done that, but that's what they're there for.
