Some tools do operate in real time like Sound Operated Recording, but none of the filters that I know of.
You need to upgrade. Modern Macs do not fully support Audacity 1.2.

Re: effects are disabled
Yes. Audacity 1.2 can leave behind damaged preference files and contaminate 1.3. There's a fancy way to do this, but the brute force way is to trash the preference files. Close everything. Go > Home > Library > Application Support > Drag the whole audacity folder to the trash. When you launch Audaci...

Re: Newb podcast editor
I'm not the editing wiz kid, but you can use the Time Shift Tool (left and right black arrow button) to slide sound or portions of sound earlier and later in the production -- although I'm sure you already knew that. One way to introduce open and closing themes and stingers is to put the audio on it...

Re: Automatic split during recording

Re: Removing guitar string noise from a recording
Sorry. I missed my cue. When you look at the blue waves of your show on the Audacity TimeLine, do they ever go all the way up and down -- like to 1.0 either direction?

Re: Removing guitar string noise from a recording
Noise Removal is only good for constant noises like an air conditioner whine or rumble. Many new guitar players complain about the squeak that their fingers make on the frets. Can you tell where the clicking is coming from? That's a new sound. There's almost no chance of getting rid of it, but we ma...

Re: Audacity Crisis! Help - Lost 17+ hours thru renaming
The other obvious solution is un-rename everything back to the original names. You can find the original names by opening up the AUP file as above and read them.
