Do you capture internet/YouTube audio or music? There is a special capture setting called "Mix-Out," "Stereo-Mix," or "What-U-Hear" that is used to do that. You need to make sure that's turned off for live microphone recording.

If you're using this for a phonograph/turntable, did you connect the thin black ground wire? Most phono amplifier system hum without that.

Anything that old would certainly have been in mono, thus killing most of the tools likely to help. But, yes, certainly if you're capturing the work yourself, do it in a very much higher quality. Music CD format 44100, 16-bit, Stereo at minimum (even if you don't need the stereo part).
