Re: 1.3 Questions
You can't open them both at once, but you can do it one at a time. They both exist. Audacity 1.3 Projects will not open in 1.2.
You can install 1.3 and create a short test Project in 1.2. See how it goes.

Re: How do I describe this waveform?
The bottom one is damaged from the point of view of sound. It has battery or DC voltage in addition to the "sound." That's what's giving it the downward shift. You can't hear battery voltage, but when it's there, it can screw up tools and filters. Usually, this means you have a damaged com...

Re: New MAC user - old PC user
The problem with computer microphones is you have to plug them into a computer or a device that simulates a computer and supplies battery. They won't work plugged in anywhere else. The Radio Shack 3013 microphone... http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102927 ...has a little watch ...

<<<The lead compound >>> It may have the same effect but different technologies. Instead of suggesting strongly that radio waves go 'round (Faraday cage effect), lead absorbs them and turns them into heat. There is no doubt in my mind it would work. Re: Default time/duration settings?
There is a really bad workaround for this. I noticed that my former duration numbers stick if I select hh:mm:ss from the default of 30 seconds-only. I'm doing a task that requires 5 minutes of tone, repeatedly. Each time I switch from seconds-only to hh:mm:ss, my five minute duration comes back with...

Re: record microphone to stereo track
Some laptops have built-in microphones that appear on both sides of a stereo recording. I think that's the one and only time that happens. All other times, single, simple microphones appear as a mono recording. One of the reasons I like using a stereo mixer is the ability to put a single microphone ...
