And while you're shifting your wiring around, I bet you resolve your "two-microphone sounds like a tin can" problem. Two microphones close to each other can sound really odd if their signals interfere with each other. "Honky, Rain Barrel." Is there a condition, any condition ever...

Take that upside down. You can get stuck in the nickles and dimes cycle and be there forever. Under what conditions would you get a perfect recording? No limit at all. Drive up in a Glen-Glenn sound van and run cables out the door. Would that work? Is that overkill? Now use a smaller van. Still over...

And if all else fails, put your cellphone on "Speaker Phone" and put your laptop built-in microphone half-way between that and you. We had a poster a little earlier that did something similar. He was complaining about quality, and yes, indeed, it would be terrible, but it would be the diff...

You are not forbidden from using the headphone connection if you can't do it any other way. That's how I did both piano2.wav and organfinale.wav from here...

That's a real MP3 file. Chances are really good the rest of your sound clips aren't.
Audacity 1.3.12 is pretty good at recognizing many more different sound types than 1.2 was. Upgrade.
