Re: Decode tapes using Dolby Noise Reduction

<<<Don't know what you mean by "circumstances">>> Circumstances. Like: "I was Director of Engineering for IBM Content Management around 2002 and one of the participants in the "Skunkworks" outside of Poughkeepsie NY, wrote a Dolby B decoder module on the back of a Piggly-Wig...

Re: Background noise removal - Please help!

The rule is you can't take apart a mixed performance into individual instruments or voices. There are some rare times that you can remove the lead singer, but that doesn't have a really good track record. You can sometimes remove air conditioning noises, too, but that frequently distorts the show. T...

Re: Save without re-encoding!...

It's much worse than that. In order to avoid double compression damage, the second MP3 needs to be as high a bitrate as you can stand. Certainly two or three times higher than the original. That will keep the original damage without adding to it. The damage will never get lower. MP3 is a one-time de...

Re: Decode tapes using Dolby Noise Reduction

=================================== It's a little worse that you think. Dolby B is the top processor from Dolby A. It has a sliding turnover frequency, IIRC 500 to 2KHz and its a compander in that low level HF was boosted up to 10 dB and loud HF boosted 0 during record encoding and the reverse durin...

<<<I only ever knew one plug-in that attempted Dolby de-emphasis but that is no-longer available. >>>

Under what circumstances?

Re: Decode tapes using Dolby Noise Reduction

Dolby is a dynamic compander system. Compression and expansion of frequency response depends on the volume of the performance, so you can't just "roll off the highs" and call it good. Or you can call it good, but it won't be. As you no doubt have already found, there are pages and pages of...

http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=40701#p104577 Compression systems work by comparing pieces of the music to each other. You might be able to get away with simple cutting and maybe simple volume controls, but the minute you apply the more serious tools: equalization, loudness pr...

Re: OS 10.6.3 and LAME .dmg installation bug

I did bother me that Audacity will install without Admin Privileges, but not the lame plugin. Only in my case, it worked.

Re: Trying to separate choral music from voice-over

One more point. If you have a Dolby AC3 sound track from a Movie DVD, those generally have the performers in the center and everything else in surround -- so it's already separated for you. All you have to do is rip the DVD and decode the Dolby track. Similarly, if you have the original studio mix t...

Re: Trying to separate choral music from voice-over

The tools define "noise" differently than you do. It's not just "sound I don't want." Had the singer sung one single note and held that note exactly the same for fifteen minutes, you would be able to get rid of it with the removal tools. They're designed to extract air conditioni...
