That's not a WAV file. WMA is Windows Media - Audio. Do you have Audacity 1.3.12 and did you install the FFMpeg software plug-in? I thought that combination would open WMA files.

You should get the lame software that comes with the version of Audacity you got -- and from the same place. You shouldn't use legacy versions.

It's not actually overloading Audacity. You're overloading your sound card. You should be able to plug the Headphone Output of your sound device (tape machine) into the Stereo Line-In of the computer sound card (sometimes blue).
