Re: Using audacity to measure the speed of sound
It doesn't work with earbuds. They're not large enough to capture enough clap to generate a signal. That's why the teacher used headphones. Those have 3/4" to 1" diaphragms and an internal impedance from 20 to 100 ohms. If you didn't know they were headphones by looking, you would take the...

Re: USB Audio Codec does not exist
We keep going on about Yamaha because You mentioned Yamaha in your question. We can only go with what you gave us. Reading over the thread again. Did it ever work? You took it out of the packing, plugged it in and nada, zippo, nothing? Does it have a power light and is it on? You have all the condit...

The system will automatically mount a USB sound device shortly after you plug it in. It should be visible in Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Input. If it's not, it didn't mount. It's possible you have an exotic piece of equipment that OS-X doesn't recognize, but with Snow Leopard, th...

We have a decision to make. Our normal inclination is to send you immediately over to download Audacity 1.3.12. If you change your computer you may have to do that anyway, but since you're on Tiger, we should be able to get his to work. Go into Audacity > Preferences > Something > [X] Hardware Playt...

Re: AIFF import issues
Go into iTunes preferences > CD Import Settings > WAV Encoder, Automatic. Select the music and Advanced > Create WAV Version. iTunes will create the second version. Don't forget to put the iTunes preferences back where they were -- usually AAC, HIgh Quality, although I use 256 the next higher than t...

Re: AIFF import issues
It can save music in AIFF, but did it? You have iTunes for Windows, right? Pull the music into iTunes and right click on the song > Get INFO.The app saves tracks in AIFF format.
I bet it's not a straight, regular AIFF file.

The maker claims a 20dB boost feature. You may not need that if you have a good pickup on your guitar. Can you turn it off? Dig in the instructions. The instruction book isn't available on-line.lightsnake usb cable

Re: make loud noises quieter
I have an audio import from a blu-ray movie that import to several mono tracks. What did the original audio tracks sound like and how did you rip them? Based on DVD technology, one of those tracks should have been the Center track with all the dialog on it. DVDs have another interesting technology ...
