Noise Reduction, a Judgement Call

I'm about to embark on a noise reduction job consisting primarily of Mic Preamp hiss. Broad band. The worst kind. I am also about to metaphorically write a check to Brian Davies for his N/R package. I have been able to achieve very good noise reduction (in other jobs -- and using all the tricks), bu...

Re: custom made deadcat for large diaphragm mic

It would look gawd-awful ugly, but you could make a cage around the microphone from bent metal clothes hangers and then stretch two coverings of ladies' panty hose over it. Effectively making an all-direction pop and blast filter. It should have near zero effect on the pattern or frequency response....

I removed your email address. That's insanely dangerous on the forum. You can put it back if you wish by editing your post, but I wouldn't. We won't be writing you back anyway. We try to keep discussions on the forum. This isn't a help desk.

Re: FYI: 1.3.x installer .EXE download corrupt?

The .EXE file is easily damaged. We've been recommending the ZIP version.

Re: compress file to 43 kb???

At those specifications, the longest sound file you can support is 5-1/2 seconds (based on napkin calculations). To do better, you must use one of the compressed sound formats -- and even those won't sound particularly good.

Re: scrambled project file

You ran out of hard drive, right? Or you tried to capture into a highly fragmented hard drive? Or both? You should be in Audacity 1.3.12 for any new work. Audacity 1.2 is hopelessly out of date and no longer supported, updated or patched. Audacity 1.3.12 has much improved Disaster Recovery over 1.2....

Re: Maybe this is the wrong program?

Oh, yes, certainly, but you may not want to. You could invest in a simple mixer, microphone and an iPod and do the whole thing live just like you used to do. The show will take very nearly the time it takes to perform it to produce the final output. If you do it in post production, you fall neatly i...

Re: Converting Full Scale to Decibel Full Scale

I've always used 20 LOG v1/v2. It's always been good enough to go on. And yes, it doesn't ever hit complete silence. It does, however, achieve a point where the system noise overwhelms the show, generally in the -130dB range or maybe a little better -- assuming you don't run out of bits first. Not t...

Re: How do I Cut music track when voice comes in?

There is always the manual approach with the envelope tool. That has the advantage of complete control over the effect. The automatic approach is called Effect > Auto Duck in Audacity 1.3.12. Care must be taken to keep from pumping the background if the announcer likes to take .. the .. dialog .. in...

Re: custom made deadcat for large diaphragm mic

I'm trying to remember who around me made a custom wind shield for his own microphone... It has to be loose so as not to attenuate high frequencies. It can't sound like you're listening through a wool sock. Oh, and it's "Gaffer's Tape" which has a cloth fabric backing. Duct Tape has a plas...
