Re: Microphone use

Audacity will only recognize one "Sound Device" at a time. So you can record either the USB microphone or the analog one. Two or three microphones is usually the magic point that people graduate to an analog mixer and higher quality microphones. There is provision for a combined microphone...

Re: increase volume on parts of mp3

It's rough to edit within a compression scheme. Compressors take into account pieces of the work compared to each other. Change some of the work and the compression quality falls apart. There are editors that will directly edit MP3, but they're no wiz kids. They do very simple editing only -- no eff...

Re: increase volume on parts of mp3

You can do it in Audacity, but you may not want to. Audacity doesn't exactly open MP3s. It imports and converts them to an Audacity internal format and then exports a new MP3 at the end. You get the corrections, but you also get double MP3 compression and damage. Few people end up with the small fil...

Re: POOR SOUND QUALITY WITH AUDACITY

If you're recording the built-in microphone, you can set Mac System Preferences so it will deliver a Stereo track to match your other tracks. If you're trying to plug an analog microphone into your Mac, that may be where the hiss is coming from. Macs don't have Microphone connections and there is a ...

Re: Convert Tapes to CD's.

I looked at the web site and they're not very forthcoming with sound information, so we'll assume the worst. You probably need an external sound card, like the UCA-202. That simple card provides one stereo pair both directions. http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/UCA202.aspx http://wiki.audacitytea...

Re: Clipping

You can get problems like this if you plug a cassette machine or machine like it into the Mic-In of your Windows laptop. Is that what you're doing?

Re: Waveform is silent!

Unless you change in in Audacity Preferences, Audacity does not pull sound inside itself for production. It goes looking for your sound files as it needs them -- in real time. Productions drop dead when you get a show exactly like you want it, save the Project and then delete all the original music ...

Re: Making Sound Files from Audio Tapes

Did you also know about the level problems? The Mic-In connection is expecting loudnesses a thousand times lower than the Line-Out or Headphone-Out of the tape machine. If you connect them to each other it can be distortion city. You can use a Deskside Windows PC or a Mac. Both of those have Stereo ...

Re: Poor audio quality

Message was selected device (USB) has no input controls. That's correct. It's a digital input. Did it work? You can always set volume and other corrections later -- that's normal. Nobody can get a final, perfect transfer the first time. If the USB connection is too loud, then yes, you need to use t...

Re: Making Sound Files from Audio Tapes

Yes, but it's a little more involved than just plugging it all together. For one thing, the tape-out is stereo and the Microphone-In of the laptop is mono -- usually, left-only. That and the loudness ranges don't match.
